Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the congress again as interim president, had offered to quit in August 2020 after an open revolt by a section of leaders, referred to as G-23, but the CWC had urged her to continue. The election to choose the Congress's next president will be held on October 17. Votes will be counted on October 19. This is the party's first presidential election in 22 years.
