After the independence, the rules of recruitment in the Indian Army changes from time to time. Anyone can enlist in any regiment. But there are some regiments in which only soldiers of the same state can be recruited, such that only Sikhs in the Sikh regiment and residents of Ladakh can join the Ladakh Scouts.
