मनाली से रोहतांग के लिए अभी तक जो रास्ता था वो सिर्फ़ 6 महीने ही इस्तेमाल हो पाता था. क्योंकि बर्फ़ की वजह से उसे 6 महीने बंद रखना पड़ता था. लेकिन अटल सुरंग ने ये समस्या हल कर दी. अटल टनल हिमालय की पीर पंजाल श्रेणी में है. ये मध्य हिमालय का हिस्सा है. सुरंग बनने के बाद मनाली और लेह के बीच की दूरी 46 किमी तक कम हो गई है. 5 से 6 घंटे का रास्ता अब सिर्फ 10 मिनट में पूरा हो जाता है. इसी वजह से चीन बेचैन है. देखें वीडियो.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the strategically important Atal Tunnel on October 3, which foundation stone was laid on May 26, 2002. Atal tunnel is the world's longest highway tunnel, which length is 9.02 KM. This tunnel connects Manali with Lahaul Spiti throughout the year.
