भारतीय सेना में 1952 से महिलाओं की औपचारिक भर्ती शुरू हो गई थी, लेकिन इससे पहले भी महिलाएं युद्द में भाग ले चुकी हैं. वैदिक काल इसके तमाम उदाहरणों से भरी पड़ी हैं. रानी लक्ष्मीबाई और चित्तौड़ की रानी अपने राज्यों की तरफ युद्द का कमान संभाला था. इससे अलावा देश की आजादी में आजाद हिंद फौज की तरफ से महिलाएं लड़ चुकी थी. महिलाओं के उस बटालियन का नाम रानी झांसी लक्ष्मीबाई रखी गई थी. देखें रिपोर्ट.

Formal recruitment of women started in the Indian Army from 1952, but even before that women have participated in the many war. Rani Lakshmibai and the queen of Chittor commanded the war towards their kingdoms.
